German Airmen Playing-cards (Deutsche Luftfahrer Spielkarte)

During the First World War, the Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkartenfabriken (VSS) edited at least four war packs with German suit-signs. Three of them are in my collection. The Deutsche Luftfahrer Spielkarte, edited by the Altenburg branch (Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik), is relatively rare, as it was printed only starting from 1918.

The cards were (like the Deutsche Kriegs Spielkarte) designed by Fritz von Lindenau and painted by Georg Koch (his name is on the Seven of Bells). The Deuces show flyers' medals. On the court cards are reigning persons, aircraft builders, and pilots. The Tens show an order, and the remaining pip cards show a military scene from aerial warfare.

On the back is the order 'Pour le Mérite'.
