Ovale Spielkarten

Around 1880, Alexander Twietmeyer in Leipzig issued the
They were printed by the playing-card factory of Friedrich Günthel, also in Leipzig. The editor's name is on the Jack of Spades.

On the box is a sticker which explains the advantages and designs. The form is chosen for easy shuffling, holding and ordering of the cards. The designs were made by Fedor Flinzer (1832 - 1911): They are intended to replace the "usual, not very pretty designs", and the court cards of the suits have been designed each with a theme:
Clubs:  Trade
Spades:  Agriculture
Hearts:  Military profession
Diamonds:  Teaching profession
The pack shown has French suit-signs, and there is a similar pack with German suit-signs.
