This pack was made around 1870 by Friedrich Vieweg in Braunschweig. The maker's initials are on the Deuce of Leaves.: 'FV', and on the Deuce of Acorns is 'Verfertiget in Braunschweig' (made in Brunswick). On the Deuce of Hearts is 'Lusus exhilerat Cor' ('the game delights the heart'), and on the Deuce of Bells the coat-of-arms of the Duchy Brunswick, although that is not completely correct.
The pack shows the so-called 'Lower Saxon pattern' with cavaliers on all court cards. Originally, there were also Sixes in such packs, but these are missing from mine. This may be due to the fact that these cards may have been used for Skat, and you need only 32 cards for that game.
This is a variant of cavalier cards with verses on some of the pip-cards. It is different from the cavalier card made by Lattmann. The verses here are related to card gaming.
In my copy, the Ten and Seven of Bells are missing. I have replaced them with cards from my picture archive. Also, there are hand-written index signs like for French-suited cards (A, K, D, B) on all cards, sometimes additionally like for German cards ('Ober', 'Unter').
