home - cards from Hannover - taxes - collection - societies - my publications |
These cards were presumably made in a PoW camp, possibly at the end of WWII or shortly after.
The pack is a so-called Schwerdter-Karte, cards with German suits and the Saxon standard pattern. It is a pity that the King of Leaves is missing. I am showing the back in its place.
These backs are made from packages of Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco which has been sold since 1927. So the cards are definitely not from WWI. As the pack is a typical German pack I assume that the cards were made by a German PoW. What surprises me is that the tobacco was in a cardboard box, normally it was sold in a tin box (which had the same design at that time).
