Pep Boys Playing Cards

This pack was designed in 1928, but the cards shown here are a later edition from 1940. The cards were printed by the Arrco Playing Card Co. in Chicago.

The cards were designed as advertising cards for an automotive aftermarket retail and service chain in Philadelphia, managed by the Pep Boys. The founders in 1921 were Emanuel (Manny) Rosenfeld, Maurice L. (Moe) Strauss, W. Graham (Jack) Jackson, and Moe Radavitz. The company still exists today.

The court cards are the same in all suits. They show:
as Kings: Moe, with a 'Cadet' battery
as Queens: Manny, with 'Varsity' oil or lubricant (?)
as Jacks: Jack, with 'Booster' motor oil
always together with other automobile spare parts and tools.

The Ace of Spades shows the the Pep Boys again.
