Playing-Card Tax Stamps from Argentina

This stamp was in use 1895 to 1902. The text is 'REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA' and 'IMPUESTOS INTERNOS'. It shows the head of Mercury. Stamps with this colour were used for imported cards. The stamp for locally made cards was in black.

This stamp was in use 1903 to 1921. The text is again 'REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA' and 'IMPUESTOS INTERNOS'. It shows the head of Mercury. Stamps with this colour were used for imported cards.

These stamps were in use 1922 to 1943. They are almost identical to the one before, but the shading of the background is different. The left (green) was used for cards produced in the country the right stamp for imported cards.

This is a card with three stamps in different colour. It is from a pack that was printed in 1946 and imported into Argentina, see the explanation.

These stamps are similar to the ones above, but the girl looks slightly different and has a different cap. She is similar to the French Marianne. They were in use 1953 to 1968, when stamping of playing-cards was abandoned. The left (green) stamp was used for cards produced in the country, the right one for imported cards.

This stamp is the green stamp again, but there is an additional red stamp, see the explanation.

The stamp was on the Ace of Hearts for French-suited cards and on the Four of Cups for Spanish-suited cards.

Additionally, there were sealing bands for the card packs.

This is a band referring to 'Ley No. 11252' for cards made in the country (by Flaiban y Camilloni), with a value of 50 Centavos. The law was enacted in 1923.
You can see further examples on my page for Argentinian tax bands.

Additionally, stamps for playing-cards have been used in some Argentinian provinces.

I am showing stamps from the province Buenos Aires. Most probably those were not used for the playing-cards themselves but e. g. for licenses to sell playing-cards (and alcohol and tobacco).

These are two stamps out of a series of 12 (presumably originally 13) stamps, intended for 'ALCOHOLES NAIPES y TABACOS' (alcohol, playing-cards, and tobacco). The values range from 0,50 Pesos to 500 Pesos. These stamps were in use 1917.

These are two stamps out of another series of 13 stamps, also intended for 'ALCOHOLES NAIPES y TABACOS'. Again, the values range from 0,50 Pesos to 500 Pesos. I do not know when these stamps were used, but they are presumably later than the previous ones.

This is another stamp used in 1929, again intended for 'ALCOHOLES NAIPES y TABACOS'. The value is 200 Pesos. I found it on a license to sell these articles.
